Technology Vision in Education
The Technology Vision in Education was completed in the first stages of my program in the Instructional Technology Leadership course. The purpose of this assignment was to determine my viewpoint about technological use in education and how technology should be used to enhance student learning. While completing this assignment, I reflected on my current school's mission, vision, and school improvement goals. In order to develop my own vision in regards to technology, I used my personal experiences as an educator to guide my viewpoint as well as professional reading. This professional reading included ISTE's essential conditions, the text The Principal as Technology Leader by T. Creighton, and scholarly articles. The focus of this assignment was to determine what practices should emerge in the future and why it is necessary for these practices to become a reality.
The Technology Vision in Education demonstrates mastery of Standard 1.1 because I was given the opportunity develop my own vision about technology in teaching, learning, and leadership. Furthermore, I was able complete professional reading about technology in education as well as collaborate with other teachers and administrators to create a shared vision. While this assignment directly addresses the development of a shared vision that is referenced in the standard, it also was a jumping board for the implementation of the vision at my school. Through the assignment, I was able to directly reflect on my own teaching and how I personally am trying to make my vision a reality and what professional learning steps I need to take next. I was also able to take a leadership point-of-view.
Creating a technology vision was an essential starting off point in completing my master's degree. The assignment afforded me the opportunity to really reflect on my own beliefs and determine what I think should lie ahead in regards to technology use in the classroom. I was able to research about technology use in education and determine why technology is an effective resource for students. Also, this assignment laid the foundation for my belief that technology should not just be about drills and skill practice, but, instead, it should be a means for engaging students in their learning. In the future, to improve the quality of this assignment, I would implement a staff wide survey to more effectively gauge the vision of my colleagues and coworkers. This would allow the vision to be truly reflective of a majority of the staff member's beliefs.
The overall work that went into creating the artifact could eventually impact school improvement, faculty development, and student learning. A vision can help relay the goals of a school, and, in turn, can motivate staff members to achieve this goal. It also helps develop a more cohesive staff that can focus on moving forward in one direction. The Technology Vision in Education assists the school in aligning their goals for their school improvement plan and can help the staff see what areas are in the most need for faculty development. Finally, by making the vision a reality, student learning will inevitably be positively affected. The impact of the assessment could be assessed by looking at the data from the School Strategic Plan.
