Copyright, Internet Safety, and Acceptable Use Handout
The Copyright, Internet Safety, and Acceptable Use Handout was created in the Instructional Technology Leadership course. The purpose of this artifact was to research appropriate technology use in classroom and provide a handout that could be shared with teachers who may not have time themselves to research copyright, Internet safety, and acceptable use issues. To complete the handout, I reviewed the Cobb County School District Board Administrative Rule, the Copyright Act, websites about Internet safety and cyberbullying as well as the text ISTE's Technology Facilitation and Leadership Standards: What Every K-12 Leader Should Know and Be Able to Do by J. Williamson and T. Redish. The handout was shared with other teachers at my school to inform them about acceptable technology use within their own classrooms.
The Copyright, Internet Safety, and Acceptable Use Handout demonstrates mastery of Standard 4.2 because it promotes safe, healthy, legal, and ethical use of technology. The handout can be used as a reference for teachers as they are implementing the Internet and technology with their students.
From completing the Copyright, Internet Safety, and Acceptable Use Handout, I learned about the acceptable use policies that are issued by the school district I work for. I found that the district considers Internet access and technology resources a privilege, and they expect their employees to respect privilege. Also, the Copyright Act provides a lot of information that all teachers should be familiar with. Violations of the Copyright Act are probably some of the most common infractions that occuar by teachers. By completing the assignment, I was also reminded about the importance of teaching our students about cyberbullying. Students should receive instruction about appropriate Internet use as well as teachers. To improve the quality of this assignment, I would have sent out a staffwide survey about what other issues or concerns teachers may have about acceptable use; therefore, I could have provided any additional information that teachers may need. I also wish I could have gotten more collaboration with the media specialist at my school. I have found that the media specialist has a plethora of information about acceptable technology use.
The Copyright, Internet Safety, and Acceptable Use Handout impacts faculty development because the handout was meant as a learning tool for teachers. The handout was really a jumping off point for discussions about the acceptable technology use. If teachers understand the elements of acceptable technology use, then students can expect a more effective learning environment for themselves. This could lead to an impact on student learning as well. If students understand their perameters and what is acceptable, then everyone is getting to work in a safer, happier environment. As previously mentioned, the impact of the Copyright, Internet Safety, and Acceptable Use Handout could be assessed by completing a staffwide survey as well as having informal conversations with teachers and administrators about acceptable use.
