SWOT Analysis
The SWOT Analysis artifact was completed in the Instructional Technology Leadership course. The purpose of this assignment was to look at the current reality of my school's technology use by reviewing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The SWOT Analysis focused on ISTE's essential conditions. To complete the SWOT analysis, I reviewed each essential condition and collected data on this condition in regards to my school's practices and performance. Then, I determined what strengths and weaknesses my school had and, finally, I made recommendations for strengthening each essential condition. The key elements of this artifact were data analysis and reflection.
The SWOT Analysis demonstrates mastery of Standard 1.2 because, ultimately, I designed a strategic plan to improve the level of technology use within my school. The development of this plan required communication with administrators and coworkers and evaluation of current practices. The experience I got developing the SWOT Analysis for my school would allow me to effectively facilitate similar initiatives in the future if needed.
The completion of the SWOT Analysis was valuable because it allowed me to focus on the ISTE's essential conditions for technology use. This is important because it allowed me to develop better background knowledge about how technology should be implemented within a school; therefore, I was able to bring this knowledge back to my school and share it with my colleagues. I also learned about the steps of designing and developing a plan that leads to your vision. While having a vision is a necessity, a strategic plan to achieve the goals of your vision is crucial. To improve the overall quality of the assignment, I would have spent more time discussing the SWOT Analysis with the administration and the technology committee at my school. At the time, I based a majority of my data on informal discussions with teachers, but I think the process could have benefitted from more formal communication with some of the more invested individuals at my school.
The work that went into creating this artifact directly impacts school improvement which should gradually impact student learning. By analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of technology use in the school, I can develop strategies that will continue to facilitate the strengths and encourage improvement on the weaknesses. The information gleamed from the SWOT Analysis could be used for an overall School Strategic Plan, which directly impacts school improvement. If teachers are using the SWOT Analysis to improve their technology practices, then student learning will be impacted as well. This impact can be assessed by looking at school performance indicators.
