3.2 Managing Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences.
ISTE Lesson Plan
The ISTE Lesson Plan was created in the Internet Tools in the Classroom course. The purpose of this artifact was to develop and implement a lesson using an Internet Tool of my own choice. For this lesson plan, I decided to implement the digital tool Voicethread. Voicethread allows individuals to have discussions using audio, text, or drawing based on slides or images that are uploaded to the site. I used this digital tool because I thought it would be a meaningful experience for my students to get to records themselves and have a discussion where every student would get a chance to share their comments and thinking uninterrupted. I implemented Voicethread in a reading lesson that focused on the book Wonder Horse: The True Story of the World's Smartest Horse by Emily Arnold McCully. To complete the lesson plan, I used a NETS-S template. The template required not only content standards, but also the NETS-S standards to be listed. The lesson plan includes an overview, essential questions, assessment, resources, an instructional plan, management, differentiation, and reflection. The artifact also includes all graphic organizers and handouts used for the lesson.
The ISTE Lesson Plan demonstrates mastery of Standard 3.2 because, to implement the lesson, I had to effectively manage the digital tool Voicethread to provide a meaningful learning experience for my students. The lesson plan was created prior to any implementation of Voicethread with the students; therefore, I was prepared to implement the digital tool with my class with few issues. Overall, the implementation of the ISTE Lesson gave me experience with managing digital tools within the context of student learning.
By completing the ISTE Lesson Plan, I learned how important it is that I am constantly providing technology-based opportunities for my students. The implementation of this lesson plan was the first time I had used Voicethread with my students. I had previously used Voicethread for my own graduate courses, but I had never used Voicethread with children before. I was a little leery to use this particular digital tool with my students, because I thought it would be hard for me to teach them to use the tool. My students really surprised me! They picked up on Voicethread very quickly, and they were really excited about sharing their thoughts by recording their own audio. Completing this lesson plan got me excited about implementing other new tools with my students, and, ultimately, I decided to focus on Internet tool implementation as my Capstone Project. To improve the quality of the ISTE Lesson Plan, I would have completed a second round of recordings that allowed students to respond to each other. I think this would have taken the student learning one step further. In the future, I would like to step up Voicethread discussions as a norm in my classroom.
The ISTE Lesson Plan impacted student learning because the implementation of the lesson provided a unique learning experience for my students. For the lessons, students reviewed the cover of the book we were reading and determined what predictions they had for the story. They will able to listen to each other's predictions. This provided an exciting way for students to share their predictions and students were motivated to check their predictions as we read the story. The impact this artifact could be assessed by evaluating the comments left by the students according to the rubric provided in the lesson as well as evaluating the students' understanding of the story.
