Professional Learning Plan and Session
The Professional Learning Plan and Session was completed during the Professional Learning and Technology Innovation Course. The purpose of this artifact was to complete a Professional Learning Plan that includes professional learning goals, strategies, action steps, persons responsible, timeline, budget, and resources needed. The plan also included a section about parent and community involvement. The completion of the Professional Learning Plan was based on a GAPSS Review and a Needs Assessment and it aligned with the school improvement plan. The Professional Learning Plan lead to the implementation of the Professional Learning Session. The Professional Learning Session included the development of a one hour, hands-on professional learning session based on a technology-related topic determined from the analysis of the needs assessment. The professional development goal that I focused on is implementing technology-based assessment to measure student learning while still promoting student engagement. The Professional Learning Session included a PowerPoint presentation, handouts, videos, and a wiki.
The Professional Learning Plan and Session demonstrated mastery of Standard 5.2 because, by completing the Professional Learning Plan, I was able to develop and implement a technology-based professional learning session. The session aligned with professional learning standards, included face-to-face and online components, and promoted best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment.
From completing the Professional Learning Plan and Session, I learned how much work goes into planning meaningful professional learning opportunities. The initial stages of this artifact began by determining the current reality of my school in regards to professional learning. I also completed a GAPSS Review to determine my school's performance. Next, I completed a needs assessment with the faculty to determine additional strengths and weaknesses with technology use and integration. From there, I developed the Professional Learning Plan and created a learning session based on the plan. The implementation of the session required a lot of materials including a presentation, handouts, and videos. Overall, I discovered that, for professional learning to be meaningful, there needs to be a lot that goes into planning it. What I enjoyed most about this artifact was completing the handouts and resources that the teachers at my school would use to learn about technology-based assessment. I think the Professional Learning Plan and Session was a valuable experience for myself and my coworkers. To improve the quality of the artifact, I would have liked to had more staff members on board with the learning session. I was not able to get as many people involved as I had hoped. Next time, I will consider what time frames will ensure the most attendance and do additional promotion to get as many people at the session as possible.
The Professional Learning Plan and Session impacts faculty development because the main goal of this artifact was to provide a meaningful professional learning experience based on the needs of the staff at my school. By completing the Professional Learning Plan, I learned what areas need to be focused on in faculty development. I gave the staff members an opportunity to participate in professiona learning themselves. The impact of the Professional Learning Plan and Session could be assessed by analyzing the post survey results from the survey given after the learning sessions. From the post results, I would be able to determine how the faculty was affected and what steps to take next.
