2.7 Assessment
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to measure student learning and technology literacy, including the use of digital assessment tools and resources.
Data Inventory
The Data Inventory was completed in the Data Analysis and School Improvement course. The purpose of this assignment was to provide a summary of all data that is available within my school and also determine what additional assessments should be used for data analysis. The Data Inventory includes a variety of assessments including statewide, countywide, and local assessments. While some assessments are provided only through pencil and paper, others are completed using the computer or using iRespond clicker software. The assessments are based on stated provided performance standards. Technology standards are embedded within those standards. While this assignment provides a summary of school wide assessments, the assessments that are completed within the school are not limited to this inventory. The inventory includes data source, content area, dates of collection, students assessed, accessibility, current data use, and more effective use.
The Data Inventory demonstrates the mastery of Standard 2.7 because it provides a collection of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments that measure student learning and technology literacy. While some of the assessments are paper and pencil, others are collected through the use of digital tools and resources. The Data Inventory provides information about how the data from the assessments are used as well how these assessments could be used more effectively.
By completing the Data Inventory, I got the opportunity to really analyze all the different ways my school assess their students and how these assessments are being effectively used for data analysis. I was surprised at how many assessments there were (on top of the classroom assessments that teachers are completing). While many of the assessments included in the inventory are required by the state or by the school district, it is important to find an effective use for every assessment. This makes assessment a valuable tool and, eventually, it should guide teaching and student learning. I benefitted from determining why the assessment was currently in place, and, then, determining how the assessment could be used more effectively. If I were to do something differently in the completion of this assignment, I would have set up an appointment to discuss the Data Inventory with an administrator. I think their input on the assignment could have been beneficial and given me an even deeper understanding of the assessments used in our school.
The Data Inventory impacts school improvement and student learning. The inventory was used as a summary to review all of the assessments that are used for data analysis within my school which, ultimately, is a part of the school improvement process. Many of these assessments are included in the School Strategic Plan. By implementing assessments, student learning should also be impacted. Assessment enables teachers to determine how their students are performing as well as what should be retaught or what should be taught next. The impact of the Data Inventory could be assessed by the School Strategic Planning Team or by reviewing the School Strategic Plan.
