Emerging Technologies for Education Wiki
The Emerging Technologies for Education Wiki was created in the Multimedia and Web Design course. The purpose of this artifact was to research an emerging technology in education and to write an article about the technology. The article was posted into a wiki to provide a resource for others about emerging technologies. I decided to research the iPad and its uses for education. The article includes, but is not limited to, the following information: basic description, equipment needed, cost, limitations, classrooms applications, adaptive/assistive technology, effectiveness, tutorials, and interesting articles about the iPad for educators. I chose to complete this article on iPads, because, at the time, my school had decided to purchase a set of iPads for the upcoming school year. I didn't own an iPad myself so I wanted the opportunity to learn about iPads and how I could effectively implement an iPad with my students. I also thought the article could be a good resource for other teachers at my school.
The Emerging Technologies for Education Wiki demonstrates mastery of Standard 3.4 because the article includes a section on adaptive and assistive technologies and the article promotes the use of these technologies with the iPad. Through my research, I determined iTunes has an entire section of special education apps that can be downloaded to the iPad. Also, I found a few articles about adaptive and assistive technology using the iPad.
From completing the Emerging Technologies for Education Wiki, I learned several things. First, this was the first time I had ever contributed to a wiki before. In the past, I didn't enjoy using wikis because the collaborative nature of wikis made me nervous that the information wouldn't be completely accurate. Through this assignment, I actually realized that the collaboration provided through wikis is what makes wikis so great. I also like that wikis can be edited and updated so easily. When I was reviewing the artifact to include in my portfolio, I found a typo that I was able to quickly fix. I also learned about the possibilities that are available through iPad in the classroom. By implementing the iPad, I can support and extend students. Using the iPad is also a great way to engage students. To improve the quality of this artifact, I would have provided more specific details on apps that can be used in the classroom. My article provided a good general overview about the iPad, but it could have used more detailed information about what apps to use for what content areas.
The Emerging Technologies for Education Wiki impacts faculty development and student learning. The purpose of the wiki was to provide a professional resource that teachers can reference for emerging technologies. A teacher could review this wiki to aid in their own professional department about technology use in the classroom. The wiki also impacts student learning because the overall purpose of the wiki is to provide technology suggestions that can be implemented with students. The implementation of iPads in the classroom could provide a positive experience that would affect student learning. The impact of the Emerging Technologies for Education Wiki could be assessed by surveying the faculty members after reviewing the wiki, The survey focus on how the wiki helped teachers, what they found most beneficial from the wiki, what they applied to their own teaching from the wiki, and what information they still need.
